English Language Arts (ELA)
South Dakota's English Language Arts Standards are divided by Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language. Several of these standards are closely connected and can be addressed by a single activity or task. Below is the Standard codes for ELA. K = Kindergarten
- (K.RL) Reading (Literature): Interpreting and understanding texts and tasks in literature materials
- (K.RI) Reading (Informational Text): Interpreting the information that comes from texts
- (K.RF) Reading (Foundational Skills): Knowledge of print, alphabetic principles, and conventions of the English writing system
- (K.W) Writing: Range of skills for independent writers and increase sophistication in language use, vocabulary, and organization of ideas
- K.SL) Speaking and Listening: Collaborative conversations and describing people, events, etc. with details
- K.L) Language: Conventions of grammar, English capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary use
The following activities revolve around the SD Kindergarten English Language Arts content standards but also include other Kindergarten standards as well as the SD Early Learning Guideline and the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework domain goals. These activities are based on kindergarten-level development and can be used to support preparing your child for kindergarten. Keep in mind that all children are unique in their development and progress at different rates.
